Ten Months

The big news for the 10 month update is that Townsend decided crawling was for babies, and started full-on walking a few days before he turned 10 months.

Nine months

Can I just say, I love this boy, and I love this age? Seriously, pretty much every single day I consciously think how much I enjoy Townsend, how thankful I am that God blessed our family with him.

At nine months, Townsend has six teeth (four on top, two on bottom). He is completely adept at standing, squatting, and standing back up again while maintaining his balance easily. He cruises around the furniture using just one hand for balance, and enjoys walking holding onto someone else’s hands, or pushing around his walker, or the footrest, or Adeline’s easel. :) Townes loves to eat, and he will eat most everything we eat now, save things that are choking hazards or unsafe for infants. His blocked tear ducts in his eyes that gave him so much trouble ever since he was born both seem to have cleared up on their own over the past month, thankfully! He says, “Nuh” for “nurse” while making the sign for “milk.” (And sometimes says nuh/signs milk for food in general.) He also says “Hi,” “All done (ahh duh),” “Dada,” “Mama” (occasionally), and “Ah-duh” for Adeline. :) He waves hello/bye-bye, and signs “all done.”

He likes to tilt his head to the side and grin at people in a coy/flirtatious way, and he has recently started realizing he gets a big laugh out of us if he scrunches up his nose and eyes and grins with his teeth showing. He takes great delight in doing it over and over, to peals of laughter every time from his adoring audience. Townsend is also LOUD when he is happy – he shrieks and squeals with delight, especially when Adeline is around, but also sometimes just when he’s tooling around happily. He has just lately started to cry loudly/tantrum a bit when he is frustrated…up til now if he cried really hard, it was because he was hurt. I have come running in alarm when I heard him burst into loud tears, certain that he’d hit his head (an occurrence multiple times daily) or pinched his fingers…only to find that he was mad because a toy was out of his reach.

He is also, finally, sleeping a lot better (oh gosh, I really should not mention that on the internet…the first rule of baby sleep is the second you talk about good sleep, it goes out the window). He takes two naps a day for a total of about 2.5-3 hours divided between them most days. And for the past few nights, he has slept from 8-8 with just one wakeup to eat around 5 a.m.! (!!!) Here’s hoping this is the new norm.

I really would keep Townes this age forever if I could, I think. I just find him so delightful. With Adeline, I was always eager for her to move to the next stage, the next skill, to see who she would become, and also wanting to move out of the hard things of having a baby. I also had a much more difficult time adjusting to motherhood and grappling with the changes it brought to my life. But with Townsend, I feel like my love for him is not stronger or deeper than it was for Adeline, but it is so much more uncomplicated…I just love him right now, how he is, without really wanting to rush him forward, without mourning the loss of a previous lifestyle, without the growing pains I went through as a first-time mom. That’s been one of the most beautiful things about having a second child, for me.

Anyway. He’s just perfection, as you can see.

(I like to imagine he’s thinking, “Why was I born in a place where it is still this freaking cold in mid-May??”)

Seven Months

As I suspected, Townsend started for-real crawling all over the place shortly before turning seven months. He was pretty darn pleased with himself once he figured it out, let me tell you. He also got his two bottom teeth this month and really began eating lots of table food – there is very little he won’t at least attempt to eat!

Townes continues to be a happy, easy-going little guy. When we’re out and about, strangers are drawn to him, and he almost always flashes them a huge grin, sometimes tucking his head coyly under my chin and peering up at them. He’s a heart-melter, this one.

One photo per week of each of my children, every week in 2014

A photo of a portrait this week. Adeline painted portraits of everyone in our family (clockwise from top left, this is me, Adeline, and Andrew). We hung these three in the living room, but the one she painted of Townsend is hung in her room, at her request, “so I can always see him near me.” <3

This photo is serving double duty this week, as his seven month portrait (for the as-yet-unwritten blog post) and his weekly photo. It was just that kind of a week.
